The psychological impacts of a dog attack

On Behalf of | Jul 28, 2023 | Personal Injury

Dogs are the most popular pet nationwide. In fact, it’s estimated that there are over 80 million dogs in the U.S. The popularity of dogs stems from their perceived loyalty, sensitivity and friendliness. With that being said, dogs are still powerful animals with different instincts than humans. Under the right circumstances, any dog has the potential to attack. Dogs who have been mistreated and are fearful are much more likely to bite.

With the power of their jaws and sharpness of their teeth, dogs can inflict serious physical injuries. Significant psychological trauma is also associated with dog attacks.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

There are few events more traumatic than a dog attack. Many victims go on to suffer from a psychological condition known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The symptoms of this condition vary but they often include nightmares, anxiety attacks, flashbacks and mood swings. Dog bite victims may also feel scared to leave their home in case another attack occurs. In children who have been attacked, it is very common for them to develop an intense phobia of dogs that stays with them into adulthood.

When thinking about injuries, it’s important to include psychological harms and emotional trauma in one’s assessment. PTSD is just one of the more notable mental health conditions resulting from dog attacks, but there are several others. These factors can be included in any personal injury claim. If a dog has attacked you and caused you injuries, be sure to seek some legal guidance, as you may be entitled to compensation for your physical and emotional harm.
